Considering moving my stuff into a VirtualBox VM or two rather than running directly on my PC. Then at some point in the future when I have the hardware for it I can fairly easily move it to proxmox. Also means installing a clean OS on my main PC is a quicker task as it would just be install virtual box, load up the VMs and a lot of stuff would already be done.

Certainly tempted by one, any particular ones to look for? UK here, currys out of stock on an MSI one and Amazon is full of names I have never heard of and half the time it comes with Windows pro which is just a waste of money buying with the hardware.
What should you look for if you want closer to pi energy use, like under 20w
Yeah, I expect there is a compromise somewhere but 10+ year old stuff which I can easily find on eBay probably just isn’t worth it for anything that is going to be on most/all of the time. Better to go for more modern lower end stuff to use less power. 250w will cost you like £50 a month to run

If it trips circuit breakers it’s using a terrifying amount of power. Honestly with energy prices I am starting to think old stuff is actually becoming a bad value in some cases.
I think the pi zero might have a place, don’t have one but at least it is actually cheap. Used an old laptop before, now running stuff on my PC which I feel was a bit of a mistake in a way but it started as one process and more appeared over time.
At some point would like to move it into a VM tbh, then I could copy the VM to a mini PC at a later date. Or easily copy it when reinstalling the OS on my main PC. VM for convenience and separating it from my general PC usage.
So, Ubuntu 10+ years ago? For normie usage you don’t need to worry about any of those things. It comes with firefox.
I worked in a PC repair shop until a few years ago. Most people didn’t want to buy MS office. Most of what they did is in a web browser. But most people that came in to buy a boot USB wanted a windows one rather than Linux, either way I just copied what ever ISO they wanted to it. Copy/paste doesn’t cost anything.
Don’t need it to be the year of the Linux desktop for me to switch to use it myself.
I think it’s also important to consider how critical the website is. Worked for and with companies where their website being down wouldn’t be a major issue and others where it would stop them being able to operate.
I setup my own with a bash script for backup years ago that uses rsync, feel too invested in that now to change
I think they were not aware of the scam that screwed over users at the time, only the one that screwed themselves over
Made a bash script using sqlite recently to automate processing some data. Best part is it terrifies everyone else at work and no one else wants to touch it because it’s on Linux and none of them have used it before.
We are not all devs/sysadmins. For a long time thought I didn’t really know what I was doing, until one day someone had an issue running an old game and I looked at the error and could tell them how to fix it by editing the launch script.
Typically how close is the TDP of the CPU to the full system power draw? Can see a few refurbished on ebay that don’t look too bad
Is it fair to compare new to used though? Also how about power consumption, if it’s on for 5 years each watt costs £13, so for something that will be on a long time power is actually quite an important consideration
Not even sure of my chances at that these days. There are very few opportunities where I live too.
Got a few Linux VMs running on my work laptop for testing stuff though and literally no one else in the support team knows how to test what I use them for. It’s a fairly rare task that no proper process exists for. My thinking is to see if I can either roll out VMs to people or better but less likely get my own virtual server.
