I thought this was dumb as fuck, but I think I understand what Microsoft is trying to do here.

What might not be obvious is that this “Windows” app is for iOS, Android and Linux - yes, it’s a replacement for remote desktop but it’s specifically a remote desktop app to connect to Windows machines.

So while I still this this rebranding is entirely unnecessary, I can see that they are trying to clearly distinguish “I’m not on windows and I need to do something on windows so I’ll use the windows app for that” .

It also means less confusion when “remote desktop” doesn’t let you connect to your Mac or whatever.

Because the time to learn a new operating system is more than I have to spare. I’m approaching middle aged, windows is familiar and I just want to kick back and enjoy my games.

Linux hasn’t reached drop-in replacement on the desktop yet. The steam deck is fantastic and I have no problems running it stock, but desktop Linux? Nah. Why would I dual boot when I can stick to one OS that does what I want and need.

(Side note: I run Linux on my server and am quite happy with it).

  • Open collective can let you specify where you want that donated money to go, so if the jellyfin admins wanted to they could have set OC up in such a way that donations could go to specific areas - not just clients, but specific feature development even.

If you’re concerned that your donation to the project wouldn’t go to something you value or your wanted to ensure a client you cared about had support, that would have been a better way to manage it.

I really think jellyfin is making a mistake by not centralising development costs for all the various clients and such out there, especially for those that require some developer account or certification to get on a storefront.

There’s no stigma with the terminal, the terminal isn’t bad, I love the terminal.

However, it’s not grandma friendly. It never will be. You need to think less about your preferences and more about a truly novice user. Most people don’t want to tinker with their machines, they just want it to work.

It’s not exactly a fair comparison, the tweaks in the bottom panel aren’t necessary for most users to do, yet a new user to Linux will need to get over a learning curve to do fairly basic tasks.

My litmus test for when Linux will be “ready” is can you do everything you need to do without using the terminal. So far I’ve yet to see a distribution that has achieved this.

The closest thing I’ve seen is SteamOS.
