Main problem is, ram isn’t upgradable on recent Apple tech, and you’ll need ram for containers, if you’re gonna host it to the CPU limit, if not, then even more so, brand new intel n100 mini pc for 100-150$ is gonna do wonders for you in self hosting field, what I’m saying is, if your MAIN goal is self hosting, then Mac is not optimal, i mean, you can buy Mac mini for your daily tasks and intel n100 mini pc for pocket change you’ll have left after buying Mac, and host your projects on intel one while using Mac yourself

I run opensuse tumbleweed kde on the same laptop, I’ve put 8gb ram and 360gb ssd and wifi 6e ax210 hmw card in it and it works good as casual machine

Sometimes your package manager asks you for root password every minute while doing few hours long update and cancelling process if you don’t enter anything for few minutes, “yay” aur manager looking at you, and you got to do other things than sit and look in the monitor all day long, things like cleaning house or touching grass for example

I use separate hdd solely as swap for these cases, used 500gb laptop hdd is good enough if you turn zswap zstd compression on, with recent kernels using mglru it works splendidly
