As someone with a strong tech background, that’s just impressive to me. It’s cool to see non-technical people are interested in self-hosting too, and for good reason.

Thankfully that’s one thing that can be restored between BIOS versions for my motherboard lol

Depending on your BIOS and/or motherboard, you can’t restore them between versions. The point of clearing the BIOS settings after flashing a new version is to ensure that you only have values that are expected, which is why restoring backups can often be blocked between versions.

Yay, another BIOS update!

I am getting so sick of all these BIOS updates because of all these security vulnerabilities all the time. It is so tiring having to set up my settings all over again all of the time. Earlier this year, or maybe it was last year, it felt like every month or two there was a new BIOS update for a new security vulnerability.

I would use LibreWolf IF it had cloud sync, since that’s a feature I actively use with regular Firefox.

edit: I tried LibreWolf and Waterfox. I copied over my Firefox profile to LibreWolf and Waterfox. LibreWolf works with all of my addons and even Firefox Sync and everything else, I had to disable “Enable ResistFingerprinting” to fix login on a couple sites and also had to prevent it from deleting cookies and site data when LibreWolf is closed but now it works perfectly for me, same as Firefox works perfectly for me. Waterfox has tons of issues with my addons like with uMatrix enabled it straight up just refuses to load any pages, also in general loading all pages is quite a bit slower, and one of my mail addons also has some weird corruption error message - Waterfox is unusable for me. I think LibreWolf is a great fit for me so I think I will most likely use that if I can be bothered, or maybe I will stick with Firefox, who knows, we’ll see I guess. Still though, LibreWolf seems great.

Sure but I’m not using their software. I’m careful about what I allow to have kernel access on my machines.

Honestly it is kind of hilarious, with how many people I have had make fun of me for using Linux, and now here I am laughing from my Linux desktop lol

Don’t use hardware RAID, use a nice software RAID like zfs. 2 HDDS and an OS SSD would be a great use case for zfs.

Have you tried Xfce? Usually it’s pretty damn stable and bug-free in my experience (outside of one time I found a bug which had a perfect workaround anyway) in my past 7 years of using it.

Yep, we are what make these sites important.

That’s why I’m always interested in self-hosting. I have my own Plex and Jellyfin seedbox server for the private trackers I’m in, with a VPS hosting an OpenVPN to make it look like I’m in a different country, just to make it that much safer. It works damn well.

I use Ubuntu too, because it works and has wide compatibility for everything, any software that supports Linux is generally tested on Ubuntu, etc. I use Ubuntu because if I tried anything else I’d end up becoming a distro hopper lol

That’s true, but you could always just install Kubuntu or Xubuntu and still get a great experience, it’s literally just Ubuntu with a different DE so you would still get the full Ubuntu “experience” imo, although yeah I do see your point. Though, I do think Ubuntu has actually moved back to GNOME and killed off Unity.

It’s really not so bad. You would likely be fine with a beginner-friendly distro like Ubuntu or Mint. Personally I use Ubuntu because it tends to be the most supported by application developers and things generally just work, it’s kind of boring stable IMO to the point where I almost want to start distro hopping and trying out something other than Ubuntu.

Though I’d recommend trying it out in a VM first to get a feel for it, and then also trying to live boot it from a USB and see how you like it.
