It’s pretty much a requirement for Linux that you copy and paste random commands you don’t understand from strangers on the internet.

Maybe decades ago it was. Nowadays that’s not a requirement as there’s GUI applications for a lot more things than before. And as a Linux user I simply find it much more convenient and faster to share some commands with another person than making screen shots and creating a howto of a few pages or making a video. Also documentation has improved. For the average Linux user the Arch Linux wiki is a nice resource, even when not using Arch Linux.

UNIX™ is a trademark name (Think of e.g. IBM AIX, HP-UX, SunOS). Linux and BSD are Unix alike. I believe that Apple has made an effort to be entitled to call an OS of theirs UNIX, not sure whether it’s Darwin or something else.

Dear OP, this whole conversation makes me think of the bullying towards open source developers, which can be seen on and off since years. Let me also share what I have seen on Mastodon : Unlike on Lemmy, Mastodon has had support for ALT text descriptions for uploaded images for some time. Several people have been complaining when people do not add such ALT text, and even bots were made, that you could choose to follow, for people to have themselves reminded that they forgot to add ALT to an image. What I have seen several times is that people were helpful by responding and giving an ALT suggestion to the OP. That would be complaining and helping in one. Here in this post conversation several people have asked OP for descriptions and then some tension came up. None of the people complaining took some time to add a description themselves and appear to want to make the OP do extra work.And I understand that the OP is not obliged to do that extra work. Regardless of all this I think that a nice solution here would be if OP or someone else creates a new Lemmy community with a name like e.g. selfhosted_software_releases (For open source software releases there is a Lemmy community like that. Can’t be bothered to search for the name now) which is only for software releases for self hosting. Then this and other selfhosted Lemmy community can have the announcement of that new selfhosted_software_releases Lemmy community as a pinned post or in the sidebar. The advantages of that :

• OP and others will not need to add descriptions
• Interested people can quickly see when there’s been new releases
• Others can have a peek at software names they never heard of before and dive into the details
• Selfhosted communities will go back to peace mode ;-)

The Amazon story is really old and Ubuntu did hear the critical voices and reverted the change. The terminal ads can be annoying on servers but you can turn them off.

If you only access your local domain name inside your LAN and via VPN you can also use Caddy to have local SSL certificates https://caddyserver.com/docs/automatic-https#local-https Have not tried this myself yet but I like the idea of not getting any warnings in browser, and this is safe as long as the Caddy CA root certificate is safe.

If I think back of the days that I was using Linux and I saw friends and family using Windows95 that had just launched (with a massive hype, and using a Rolling Stones song to promote it) the Blue Screen of Death was fairly normal for folks. And they lived with it, and they continued to live with it because they thought that they had no choice, and they were incredibly happy to not having to use DOS anymore. Later some of the folks I knew after having their Windows computer flocked with Windows viruses they bought a Mac, and as a matter of saying, lived happily ever after. Not everyone can afford Macs though.And not every “normie” is ready to use Linux.

Well, yes, that transphobic post was very bad yesterday :( It was one person and the poster got a 30 days community ban on lemmy.world (check the modlog). The copy of the post was gone on lemmy.world but was still visible on lemmy.ml later, downvoted a lot.

Should I feel sorry for Reddit Windows (That OS from Redd…mond, WA,USA) users ? Dunno.

Yunohost is doing the installation and finishing with having a XMPP and email server, and from there you can install apps on top of that. You can play with Yunohost inside a container if you wanted to but you will have to prepare the proxy in front of it. If you want to try Yunohost the easiest way, rent a VPS for it.

Yeah it pisses me off the way people are like “tech bros ruined the internet”. No, users ruined it! There was no reason to stop self-hosting webpages, forums and IRC servers. Users switched to Facebook instead because they preferred it and didn’t care about the downsides. There’s an alternative to every website and app which respects privacy, serves no ads, and has no algorithm to farm your outrage. Users refuse to use them because they aren’t cool enough.

You got a point there, though I think it’s users and corporations who both ruined it. And why ? Because users were not well informed and did choose for easy solutions without caring about privacy. At the last Tw(X)tter Exodus to Mastodon you could see several vocal new Mastodon users complain about not having a quote option. And probably several of them stopped using Mastodon for that. People have strong opinions and when they can choose to communicate with most of them friends with things like Facebook they go for that rather than having to spend time on exploring more privacy friendly options. And why ? Because there is so little time and because technology is scary for a lot of “normies”. I believe that is the success of Apple : shiny looking white design and easy of use. No plug & pray but easy peasy communication. Never mind the high prizes and walled pay garden. Ease of use and design is top priority for some. Does it makes sense to re-educate people and inform them ? I believe yes, but only if they are interested and have some spare time.

OpenSUSE was actually released long before Arch even existed.

You’re basically right but just some historic facts added :

Judd Vinet started the Arch Linux project in March 2002. OpenSUSE : Its development was opened up to the community in 2005, which marked the creation of openSUSE. Before that it was called SUSE Linux, first released in 1994.

Bold :-) openSUSE is based on zypper and rpm. Arch Linux uses its own package system.
