  • Well, just glancing at it, it isn’t discord. It doesn’t connect to discord servers at all.

What it does is replicate discord, in a way that allows users to still make use of things that discord users are already into. Bots in particular.

So discord won’t have access to anything that goes on at all, unless you’re using something that also connects to discord.

Pop-ups and fake notifications would have more to do with the client you’re using than the back-end would, so if you use a client that does those things, I wouldn’t bet on that changing.

The caveat: I’m no dev of any kind, so I can’t say anything about the actual code, I’m basing this on their own description. I linked the page to my cousin that sometimes will give a quick scan for hinky shit for me, but there’s no telling if or when he’ll do so nd get back to me.

  • Horse shit. Whoever actually made this meme doesn’t match with the actual usage of proprietary at all. You could maybe shoehorn this usage into it, but it would be like shoving a sasquatch into high heels in size 6; it just doesn’t fit.

It’s a meme, so it’s whatever, but it’s so far from reality it isn’t funny, it doesn’t work.

  • Ubuntu. Back when win 10 was announced and all the bullshit started.

But unity was definitely not my thing, and I tried a handful of other distros on my dad’s old computer. I figured if I could get a decent functionality on that, I’d be able to comfortably use whatever I settled on for a decent box.

Mint with cinnamon is where I settled. Cinnamon or plasma are perfect for my wants, and mint being debian related makes software damn easy to get going fast. What’s not to like about that? I tried it with dual boot on my gaming box at the time, and then when I set up a newer box, I went straight mint. Now, the old one is my air gapped media machine running win7 because fuck life without musicbee.

Everything else is on mint except my kid’s gaming laptop (which is an oxymoron imo, but whatever) because they’re unwilling to try anything else, and my dad’s current but ancient box running 11 and being nearly useless because of that. But he’s damn near 80, so he can do whatever he wants short of shitting on the dinner table.

  • It’s honestly not bad since you don’t have a lot of stuff.

Like you said, some hangers are a priority purchase. Need to do some non permanent runs for the lan cable.

Beyond that, you’ll want something to get the bed off the floor, be it an actual foundation/box spring, or something improvised. It really does change things mentally to have a proper bed. It feels more like a proper home than a temporary cot somewhere. It is harder to move, so if this is going to be a few months stay, it wouldn’t be worth it, but if you’re looking at a year or two, you’ll want to figure something out.

Curtains would be another mid term option. Not worth it for a few months, worth it for a year plus. Makes a huge difference in sleep with the light better limited.

The rest? Depends on house rules. Like someone else said, having more than bare walls makes even a small room feel cozy and homey rather than like you’re shoved in somewhere. You can use poster putty if you aren’t allowed to hang things more securely.

But look, at 20, nobody feels like an adult unless they’re delusional lol. You’re just starting out in that regard, there’s going to be bumps and a lot of changes as you figure out how to get through life. Don’t worry about it, just learn from any mistakes you make so the next mistake is different, and you’ll be fine.

Finding life balance is a thing. It takes time. I can’t honestly say I found mine until my mid twenties, and it still took a few years to figure out how to maintain it through changes like moving or new jobs. You’ll be fine homie :)

Don’t forget us dyslexics though! Cli is rough on that, but gui tends to avoid the errors a typo can cause.

I swear, having to copy/paste stuff in terminal to avoid typing the damn commands five times is way less convenient.

I get it, Linux veterans love the terminal because it is efficient and capable. But there’s multiple reasons for a gui interface for common tasks, accessibility being the biggest.

  • Is that really a thing? I don’t usually get into discussions about DEs that often, and pretty much never irl. So I haven’t seen any general vibe at all.

Like, my impression of kde vs gnome is that they’re both very geared towards a more general user that’s going to be doing basic things, but with the ability to go more advanced as needed. I kinda assumed they were both going to draw people that are “basic” like the images in the meme for gnome, with cinnamon users also being in that range, where something like xfce would be for folks that want a bit more modularity and “hackiness”.

I’m not being a smartass, I just don’t really know if there’s more to the meme than just a bit of fun or not.
